2020-2021 Afterschool Programs
2020-21 Afterschool Program begins Monday, March 1 for Alamance-Burlington students!

For the remainder of the 2020-21 school year, there will be no part-time or full-time option for Afterschool. All students are able to stay until 6:00pm daily. |

About the program
Children are provided a healthy dinner (starting the 2nd week), snack, homework assistance, and organized games in a safe, fun, recreational environment to keep children active and engaged in physical activities [enhancing their daily routine]. To lock in a spot for your child at an Afterschool Program, register online or in person. Sites are tentative based on enrollment. Please view the 2020-21 General Information and Fees for additional polices and procedures such as pick-up, discipline and important phone numbers.

Programs sites
The Burlington Recreation and Parks Department and the Alamance-Burlington School System offer Afterschool Programs at the following locations: • Grove Park Elementary
• Hillcrest Elementary
At this time, we will not be offering programs at Andrews Elementary or Newlin Elementary. However, we will be collecting names and phones numbers for those interested in an Afterschool program at these sites. With enough interest, we will be able to offer this program. To be placed on the interest list, please call the BRPD Main Office at (336) 222-5030.
*We must have a minimum of 10 students to operate any Afterschool program.*
Pick up & drop off programs
For the remainder of the 2020-21 school year, BRPD will not provide transportation for any Afterschool site and Thataways Youth Center would not operate as an Afterschool drop-off site.
Virtual Learning
On the days your student is learning remotely, they are able to attend Thataways Youth Center for Virtual Learning Rec Days at an additional cost. This program operates from 7:30am - 6:00pm and lunch is provided. Transportation is not provided. BRPD will provide a quality academic environment (quiet space, socially distanced student work spaces, internet access, adults to monitor etc.) where students can complete their studies. Staff will provide assistance to students as needed but please keep in mind that staff are not teachers. Due to the variance in each students virtual schedule and to reduce distractions, children are required to bring their school work daily. Parents will be asked to submit their student’s daily school schedule and login details. Students will be required to provide their own laptops, chargers and headphones. Cellphones will not be allowed.
To Register:
Afterschool registration begins Friday, February 26 online and in-person at the Burlington Recreation & Parks Main Office (1333 Overbrook Road, Burlington, NC 27215).
- If registering in person, you must make an appointment by calling the BRPD Main Office at (336) 222-5030. A completed registration form and signed COVID-19 wavier is due at the time of registration.
- If registering online, all questions and waivers must be answered/signed electronically before you are able to check out. Please answer each question with as much detail as possible.
There is no registration fee, supply fee, or transportation fee. Space is limited. For more information call (336) 222-5030.
Fees
Afterschool Only (2 days per week) | $50/month per child |
Virtual Learning (3 days per week only) | $150/month per child |
Virtual Learning (5 days per week) | $280/month per child |
Afterschool (2 days) & Virtual Learning (3 days) | $200/month per child |
Late Fees
Parents that are late picking up their child will be charged a late fee of $1 per minute per family. The late fee must be paid before your child can return. If you are consistently late, your child will be dropped from the program.
Payments:
Fees are due before the 1st of every month. If payments are not received before the 1st of every month, your child will not be able to attend the program until it is paid.
Payments can be made:
- In person at the Main Office (1333 Overbrook Road) by appointment only.
- Online at https://secure.rec1.com/NC/burlington-nc/catalog.
- Drop box at the main office (check or money orders only).
With recent changes in PCI Standard Compliance and to protect information and financial sources, we are no longer permitted to accept over the phone payments for any Burlington Recreation and Parks program.
Payments will not be accepted at the Afterschool sites.
REFUND POLICY:
There are no refunds or transferable options for Afterschool/Virtual Learning payments. (i.e. payments cannot be transferred to another Burlington Recreation & Parks program, another month or to the next school year).

About Virtual Learning Rec Days
In response to ABSS decision to follow Plan C (Virtual Learning) for the first nine weeks of school, Burlington Recreation and Parks will offer Virtual Learning Rec Days for students enrolled in Alamance-Burlington School System for rising kindergarten through 8th grade. The program will operate at Thataways Youth Center (1331 Overbrook Road, Burlington, NC 27215). This facility will be CLOSED to the non-participants during program hours.
BRPD will provide a quality academic environment (quiet space, socially distanced student work spaces, internet access, adults to monitor, etc.) where students can complete their studies. Staff will provide assistance to students as needed but please keep in mind that staff are not teachers. Eligibility - Students must meet all of the following
- The child must currently attend kindergarten through 8th grade
- Be 5 years on or before August 31, 2020
- Attend school in the Alamance-Burlington School System
- Be a resident of the City of Burlington

- We do not allow drop-ins
- Rates will not be pro-rated.

Spaces are limited and on a first come, first served basis. Spaces can not be held over the phone. Registration forms & payment are due at the time of registration. You can register for sessions separately or together. Priority registration will be given the employees of the City of Burlington.

BRPD is not responsible for any items brought from home. Participants are responsible for their belongings brought to Rec Days. Electronics are NOT allowed be brought to Rec Days, including hand held games, iPods, smartwatches & cell phones (this does not include laptops or tablets for academics).

REC DAYS

ABOUT rec days:
On Teacher Workdays, certain Holidays, and select snow days the Rec Days Program operates at Thataways Youth Center at 1331 Overbrook Road. This facility will be CLOSED to the public during Rec Days. Registration form and payment must be received in advance and a hard copy of the receipt must be presented at the sign in table for all participants. If you are delinquent in Camp or Afterschool payments your child will not be able to attend Rec Days. No refunds or transferable options for Rec Day payments. Rec Days must have a minimum of 10 paid participants to operate. To be eligible for Rec Days: 1) a child must currently attend kindergarten AND 2) be 5 years old on or before August 31, 2019.

WHAT TO WEAR:
- Sturdy sneakers & Socks (no flip flops, sandals or crocs)
- Sunscreen
- Coats as the seasons change (we play outside!)
- Clothes you do not mind getting dirt or paint on throughout the active day
WHAT TO BRING*:
- A bottle of water with your child’s name on it
- Morning snack (an afternoon snack will be provided)
- A healthy lunch and drink (microwave will not be available)
- The Afterschool Meal program will NOT operate during Rec Days.
- On certain days, Thataways Time will be offered. Children may purchase healthy concessions or play arcade games & pool during this time. Children will also play dance games to win prizes at no charge. Money can be brought, but is not required.
- Printed copy of the receipt must be presented at the sign in table for all participants.
REC DAY SNOW DAYS
Are the kids out of school for a Snow Day? Parents need to go to work?
Rec Day Snow Days operates when the children are out of school due to snow, the accumulation has stopped, and road conditions are clear enough for our families and staff to attend safely.
Rec Day Snow Days are held at Thataways Youth Center.
Fees
Rec Day Snow Days are no longer included in Afterschool Registration. $15 per Rec Day Snow Day per child.

3) Watch WFMY News 2 or WGHP Fox 8 and look for "BRPD Afterschools".
4) Call Thataways Youth Center at (336) 222-5134 once Rec Day Snow Days begin for the day.
