Outdoor Programs for Seniors

Outdoor Programs for Seniors engages adults 55+ in outdoor activities to promote the health benefits of being active in nature. Burlington Recreation and Parks provides experienced guides and a diverse program offering. All participants must have a medical clearance and liability waiver & release completed for the current year before participating. Upcoming Events

For all hikes sturdy, closed-toed walking shoes and water are required. Trekking poles are highly recommended. Other recommended items include insect repellent, hat, sun protection, and small backpack to easily carry belonging.

Day Trip: Occoneechee Mountain 
May 28 from 8:30 am – 3 pm
Fee: $5 (plus money for lunch)

Meet at Kernodle Senior Center - 1535 S. Mebane St. Burlington.  Transportation provided.  Hike a strenuous 3 miles at Occoneechee Mountain – expect steep, long hills and lots of rocks/roots on trail. Your effort will be rewarded with good views and post-hike lunch at Hillsborough BBQ (www.hillsboroughbbq.com). After lunch take a short stroll around Gold Park before heading home. Register and pay by 5/26. PREREQUISTE: 3 SOAR hikes since 3/1/20.

Hike: Cedarock Park
June 3 from 9:30-11:30 am

Meet at Cedarock Park – 4242 R. Dean Coleman Rd. Burlington. Park in the lot on the left just passed the playground. Hike 2-3 miles on the Rock Creek Trail. Expect natural surface trail (roots, rocks, etc.) over rolling terrain with a few steep hills. Register by 6/1. Optional transportation from Senior Center available for $2 – van leaves at 8:55 am. Pay day of hike.

Day Trip: Zip and Hike 
June 10 from 8:00 am – 5:15 pm
Fee: $65

Meet at Kernodle Senior Center - 1535 S. Mebane St. Burlington. Transportation provided. Fly through the tree tops at Carolina Ziplines on a 1.5-2 hour canopy tour. Bring a sack lunch for a picnic after the tour. Then travel to Pilot Mountain State Park for a 1-mile hike around Pilot Knob before heading back to Burlington. PREREQUISTE: 3 SOAR hikes since 4/1/20.

Hike: Shallow Ford Natural Area
June 17 from 9:30-11:30 am

Meet at Shallow Ford Natural Area - 1955 Gerringer Mill Rd. Burlington. Hike 3 miles over rolling terrain and natural surface trail through this 190 acre nature area along the Haw River. Register by 6/15. Optional transportation from Senior Center available for $2 – van leaves at 9:00 am. Pay day of hike.

Hike: Haw River Trail 
June 24 from 3:00-5:00 pm

Meet at the Glencoe Paddle Access - 2348 Glencoe St. Burlington. The hike is out and back on the Haw River Trail with a total distance of 2 miles. The trail has rolling terrain, a few stairs and natural surface path. Register by 6/22.
