Outdoor Programs for Seniors

Outdoor Programs for Seniors engages adults 55+ in outdoor activities to promote the health benefits of being active in nature.  Burlington Recreation and Parks has teamed up with Alamance County Recreation and Parks to provide experienced guides and a diverse program offering. All participants must have a medical clearance and liability waiver & release completed for the current year before participating. Hike: Rock Creek Trail
July 26 from 9 – 11 am

Meet at Cedarock Park - 4242 R. Dean Coleman Rd. Burlington. Park in the lot just past the playground. The hike will be about 2.5 miles on rolling, natural surface trail. Hiking sticks recommend. Bring a water bottle. Register by 7/24.

Hike: Lake Cammack
July 31 from 9 – 11 am 

Meet at Lake Cammack – 4790 Union Ridge Rd. Burlington. Hike about 2 miles over rolling terrain next to the lake. Look for bald eagles, osprey and heron as we hike. Register by 7/27. This is a great hike for beginners.

Kayak: Mackintosh Lake
August 10 from 9 – 11 am
Fee: $15 or   $3 with your own boat

Meet at Guilford Mackintosh Marina – 1345 NC HWY 61 Whitsett. Don’t paddle alone – join in a group paddle and enjoy a morning on the lake with friends. Bring your binoculars!  Fee includes guide, boat rental, paddle and PFD. Register and pay by 8/8. Space limited.

Hike: Haw River State Park
August 15 from 9:00 am – 2 pm
Fee: $5

Meet at Kernodle Senior Center - 1535 S. Mebane St. Burlington. Transportation provided.  Hike about 3 miles of (new to us) trails - Piedmont Loop, Lake Loop and the Wetlands Boardwalk. Bring a lunch for a picnic after the hike. Trekking poles recommended. Bring a water bottle. Register and pay by 8/13.

Hike: Hagan-Stone Park
August 22 from 9 am – 2 pm
Fee: $5 (plus money for ice cream)

Meet at Kernodle Senior Center - 1535 S. Mebane St. Burlington. Transportation provided. Hike about 3-3.5 miles on rolling natural surface trails. Trekking poles recommended. Bring a bottle of water and pack a lunch for after the hike. We’ll stop by Homeland Creamery for a treat on the way back to Burlington. Register and pay by 8/20.

Hike: Haw River Trail
August 28 from 9 – 11 am 

Meet at the Glencoe Paddle Access – 2348 Glencoe St. Burlington. Please car pool if possible - the parking lot is small. The hike is out and back on the Haw River Trail with a total distance around 2 miles. The trail has rolling terrain and natural surface trail. Trekking poles recommended. Register by 8/27.
